About Cambodia

cambodia, the place where sihanoukville is

Cambodia is a Country.
Some people call it Kampuchea.
(some call it Cambodge)

Located between Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and the Bay of Thailand, Cambodia is a tropical country in South-East Asia.  The people here are called Khmer, and the language is Khmer also.

Things to do in Cambodia.

Of course, we think the best place in Cambodia was in SihanoukVille, but there may be a few other places to see and experiences as well.  Want to learn a few Khmer Phrases?..... The Khmer Primer.

Angkor Wat
O. K.  Some people do come here only to see Angkor Wat.  A 900 year old temple complex, covering dozens of square kilometers in the jungle.  A few (hundred) other web sites can tell you a bit more.  Only problem is....... there's no beach there.

Phnom Penh
The capital city, located in the center of the country.  Situated on the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers, this city of over a million people is growing every day.  Just another place without a beach.

The smaller towns
Small towns, small cities, and everything in-between.  Some of the bigger towns are Kep, Battambang, Koh Kong, & Kampot.  And of course, SihanoukVille.

Jungle To the North
and South-West are (were?) untouched jungles.  Lions and Tigers and Bears.  Some can be reached by road, some by helicopter, some only by motorcycle, and some cannot be accessed at all.  You do need to take precautions when going into the jungle (like appropriate clothing, medicines, food and a map would be nice.  Probably want a local tour guide as well.)

Islands
The kind in the Ocean we mean.  Cambodia has about 2 dozen tropical islands off the coast of Kampot, Kep, SihanoukVille and Koh Kong, in the Bay of Cambodia (Bay of Thailand). Some of these are unpopulated, some lightly populated, most will be housing and resorts in a few years, and 2 islands (combined size of a few football fields) are totally covered in resort.

Cities
The big cities have a host of rooms from $5 to $4,500 a night.  $5 gets you a bed, fan, and light bulb. (except for SihanoukVille)  For about $12 at most places, you can get a nice room with air-con, cable TV, and hot water.  Cheap.

Besides SihanoukVille, Phnom Penh, and Siem Reap offer the finest luxury 5 star hotels to be found.

Transportation
Flights into Cambodia generally go to either Phnom Penh or Siem Reap (Angkor Wat), although many flights are now coming directly into the SihanoukVille Airport.

Once you're in the country, the most common forms of travel are by road (bus, tuk tuk, taxi, bicycle, oxcart, or motorcycle) and by boat in the rivers or ocean.
